If Kansas City’s memorials speak to its history, its public art energizes the present with bold creativity and imagination. Wander the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and you’ll find giant shuttlecocks—yes, badminton birdies—scattered across the lawn. These playful Shuttlecocks have become one of the most photographed spots in the city, and for good reason. Their unexpected scale and whimsical placement turn the museum’s stately architecture into a delightful, memorable experience. They remind us that art doesn’t always have to be serious—it can be lighthearted, fun, and still deeply moving.
In Penn Valley Park, another symbol quietly watches over the city—The Scout, a bronze statue of a Native American on horseback. Originally brought in as a temporary exhibition, it won so many hearts that it found a permanent home here. Gazing out over the skyline, this statue has become a symbol of the city’s identity and its cultural depth. Nearby, the Sky Stations—futuristic forms perched atop the Kansas City Convention Center—seem to float above the skyline, glowing at night like something from another world.
