HOUSEFULL 5 is a paisa-vasool killer comedy that works due to the performances and the climax Movie Review: HOUSEFULL 5 is a paisa-vasool killer comedy

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Abhishek A Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri

Director: Tarun Mansukhani

Housefull 5 Movie Review Synopsis:

HOUSEFULL 5 is the story of a murder in a cruise. United Kingdom’s seventh richest person, Ranjeet Dobriyal (Ranjeet) is all set to celebrate his 100th birthday in his luxurious ship. The head honchos of his company – CFO Maya (Chitrangda Singh), COO Bedi (Dino Morea), CMO Shiraz (Shreyas Talpade) and CEO and Ranjeet’s son Dev (Fardeen Khan) – are in attendance, along with Captain Sameer (Nikitin Dheer), cruise officer Batuk Patel (Johny Lever) and Aakhri Pasta (Chunky Panday). Suddenly, Ranjeet passes away. The lawyer, Lucy (Soundarya Sharma), arrives and reads the will of Ranjeet. As per the will, Ranjeet has bequeathed all his wealth to his son from his first wife Shakuntala Devi (Archana Puran Singh), Jolly. Jolly is all set to arrive on the ship the next day. To the horrors of Dev and the rest of the team, three people arrive, all claiming to be Jolly – Jalabuddin aka Jolly (Riteish Deshmukh), Jalbhushan aka Jolly (Abhishek A Bachchan) and Julius aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar). They are joined by their respective spouses, Zara (Sonam Bajwa), Sashikala (Jacqueline Fernandez) and Kanchi (Nargis Fakhri). Dev decides to conduct a DNA test to find out who the real Jolly is. At night, all of them party. They consume a drink mixed with a mysterious powder and as a result, they forget what happened at night. At the same time, Dr Aman Joshi (Akashdeep Sabir) is murdered. All clues indicate that the murder is committed by one of the three Jolly’s. From the UK mainland, two cops, Bhidu (Sanjay Dutt) and Baba (Jackie Shroff), arrive to investigate. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Housefull 5 Movie Story Review:
Sajid Nadiadwala’s story has all the trappings of a blockbuster. Sajid Nadiadwala, Farhad Samji and Tarun Mansukhani’s screenplay has a few rough edges but overall, it works. Kudos should go to the writers as there are so many characters and motives. Yet, they have managed to flesh them ably. Farhad Samji and Tarun Mansukhani’s dialogues are a highlight. A few one-liners are below the belt and even slightly racist. But the frontbenchers and those who don’t mind such humour will have no complaints.

Tarun Mansukhani’s direction is supreme. His biggest achievement is that he has retained the essence of the HOUSEFULL franchise, though he comes from a different school of filmmaking. He has also succeeded in keeping the interest levels high from start to finish. Moreover, it’s unpredictable. The identity of the killer in both versions will shock viewers.

Housefull 5 | Official Trailer | Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh | Sajid Nadiadwala

On the flipside, after a rocking first half, the interest level drops post-intermission. The jokes of the cops don’t land properly. Certain scenes had no relevance to the overall plot and it made no sense to have them in the film. Also, the use of ChatGPT type stills for the very final scene could have been avoided.

HOUSEFULL 5 begins on a bloody note and it gives an impression that one has come to see a slasher film. The scene that follows sets the base. The use of a medley of the old HOUSEFULL songs will put a smile on the face of the viewers. The introduction of Jolly’s is superb and also the track of the bird, Gucci. But the real fun begins when the protagonists wake up with no memory of the last night. The scene of Jalabuddin and Kanchi especially will bring the house down. Even the intermission point is too funny. Post-interval, the entry of Dagdu Hulgund (Nana Patekar) is massy. The ending is full of madness.

Housefull 5 Movie Review Performances:
Akshay Kumar, as expected, kills it with his humour and badass performance. Riteish Deshmukh comes next and is very entertaining. Abhishek A Bachchan plays a character that has quirk. Though he is fine, he gets overshadowed by the rest of the cast. Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Soundarya Sharma and Chitrangda Singh are entertaining and add to the glamour quotient. Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff are lovely but are let down by the writing. Nana Patekar has a late entry. Yet, he leaves a mark. Fardeen Khan and Dino Morea lend able support. Shreyas Talpade is sadly wasted. Chunky Pandey, Ranjeet and Johny Lever are funny while Nikitin Dheer and Akashdeep Sabir are okay.

Housefull 5 movie music and other technical aspects:
Songs are well woven into the narrative. ‘Laal Pari’ is catchy while ‘Dil E Nadaan’ and ‘Qayamat’ are foot-tapping. ‘The Phoogdi Dance’ is based on an interesting idea but it doesn’t come out as intended. Julis Packiam’s background score is exhilarating.

Manikandan Velayutham’s cinematography is cinematic. Parvez Shaikh’s action is appropriate. Rohit Chaturvedi and Sanam Ratani’s costumes are very glamourous. Rajat Poddarr, Rajnish Hedao and Iain Andrews’ production design is grand. Do It Creative Ltd and NY VFXWaala’s VFX is satisfactory. Rameshwar S Bhagat’s editing could have been slicker in the second half.

Housefull 5 Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, HOUSEFULL 5 is a paisa-vasool killer comedy that works due to the performances of the lead cast, subject, humour quotient, unpredictable climax, franchise value and unabashed madness. If you are in the mood for mindless fun, this one hits the sweet spot.

THUG LIFE fails to entice due to the weak execution and silly post-interval portion Movie Review: THUG LIFE fails to entice due to the weak execution

Star Cast: Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan T R, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi

Director: Mani Ratnam

Thug Life Movie Review Synopsis:
THUG LIFE is the story of a man facing betrayal from all corners. The year is 1994. Shaktivel (Kamal Haasan) is a gangster and runs a gang started by his brother Manickam (Nassar). One day, while they are at their basti in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, they are attacked by the police. A newspaper vendor dies in the firing. Shaktivel adopts the son of the vendor, named Amar. Amar later informs Shaktivel that he also has a sister, Chanda, and she’s missing since the day of the firing. Shaktivel promises to find her. 22 years pass. The year is 2016 and Amar (Silambarasan TR) is now the right hand man of Shaktivel. Manickam feels neglected and develops jealousy. Meanwhile, his daughter commits suicide after she gets pregnant and her boyfriend, Ranvijay (Rohit Saraf), dumps her. Ranvijay is the nephew of Sadanand (Mahesh Manjrekar), an old foe of Shaktivel. Shaktivel finds Ranvijay and kills him, further fuelling the enmity with Sadanand. Shaktivel is arrested and Amar takes charge. Amar joins hands with Sadanand to end the bloodshed, though Shaktivel has reservations. Ranvijay’s brother (Ali Fazal) doesn’t agree with the alliance and he attacks Shaktivel. Shaktivel survives but that’s not the end of the problem. Amar, Manickam and other gang members gang up to finish Shaktivel. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Thug Life Movie Story Review:
Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan’s story has promise though it’s also clichéd. Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan’s screenplay is arresting in places. But overall, it’s messy and full of cinematic liberties. The dialogues are decent. A film like this should have some clapworthy one-liners, ideally.

Mani Ratnam’s direction is occasionally decemt. To give credit where it’s due, he keeps viewers engaged, at least in the last one hour. The scene at Goa before and after the bomb explosion is memorable. The climax, though a bit unimaginative, keeps viewers hooked. The opening is also quite stylish and the use of black and white gives an interesting touch.

On the flipside, the film soon drops after a great start. The scenes are not properly stitched together, which is shocking, since the director is highly talented. But the film falls rapidly immediately after the intermission. A character is recovering from a bullet injury. He is shot twice and falls from a great height that too in biting cold. Yet, the character survives as if he has suffered just a minor bruise. And that’s not all. The character walks for miles and gets caught in an avalanche! Needless to say, he still survives. This track looks out of place, as the first half gives an impression that it’s a realistic gangster drama.

Thug Life – Hindi Trailer | Kamal Haasan | Mani Ratnam | STR | A.R. Rahman | RKFI | MT | RG

Thug Life Movie Review Performances:
Kamal Haasan, as expected, rises above the script. He looks convincing while doing action and shines in the emotional scenes. Silambarasan TR too puts his best foot forward. Trisha Krishnan (Indrani) looks stunning and performance wise, one wishes she had more to do in the film. Abhirami (Jeeva) is memorable in the second half in the beach scene. Nassar is dependable as always. Ali Fazal hardly has any screen time and is too similar to his act in MIRZAPUR. Aishwarya Lekshmi (Anna) is too good, albeit in a cameo. Joju George (Pathros), Sanjana Krishnamoorthy (Mangai), Bagavathi Perumal (Anburaj), Ashok Selvan (Jai Royappa) and others are decent. Mahesh Manjrekar and Rohit Saraf are passable.

Thug Life movie music and other technical aspects:
A R Rahman’s music is just okay. ‘Jinguchaa’ is the best of the lot followed by ‘Sugar Baby’, ‘Veer E Kainaat’ and ‘Chand Ke Tukdey’. A R Rahman’s background score is exhilarating but in a few scenes, it starts all of a sudden.

Ravi K Chandran’s cinematography is splendid. Anbariv’s action is entertaining though it’s disturbing in a few scenes. Sharmishta Roy’s production design is realistic. Eka Lakhani’s costumes are authentic while Amritha Ram’s costumes for Kamal Haasan are realistic. Special mention should also go to Akihito Ikeda’s make-up for Kamal Haasan. A Sreekar Prasad’s editing is functional.

Thug Life Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, THUG LIFE fails to entice due to the weak execution and silly post-interval portion. The Hindi version releases amid limited buzz and strong competition from HOUSEFULL 5. As a result, it will struggle to find an audience.

STOLEN leaves an impact due to its stark realism and edge-of-the-seat moments Movie Review: STOLEN leaves an impact due to its stark realism

Star Cast: Abhishek Banerjee, Shubham Vardhan, Mia Maelzer

Director: Karan Tejpal

Stolen Movie Review Synopsis:
STOLEN is the story of two brothers on the run. Gautam Bansal (Abhishek Banerjee) arrives at Kumba railway station to receive his brother Raman Bansal aka Rambo (Shubham Vardhan). They have an important family function to attend the next day. Raman alights from the train and at the same time, a kidnapper escapes with Champa, the five-month-old daughter of Jhumpa (Mia Maelzer). The kidnapper bumps into Raman and then runs away. At first, Raman is accused by Jhumpa of snatching her child. The cops arrive and begin investigations. Raman is interrogated thoroughly and the cops even catch the tea boy at the station, who confesses to being a part of the kidnapping. He reveals that the kidnapper is hiding with Jhumpa in ‘kasuni kothi’ (cursed manor). The cops express their inability to go to that place. Raman calls out their callousness as he feels bad for Jhumpa. This enrages the cops and they compel Raman and Gautam to join them for the expedition to the cursed manor. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Stolen Movie Story Review:
Karan Tejpal, Swapnil Salkar and Gaurav Dhingra’s story is inspired by real-life events. Karan Tejpal, Swapnil Salkar and Gaurav Dhingra’s screenplay is engaging for most parts. Shubham Vardhan and Swapnil Salkar’s dialogues are straight out of life and conversational.

Karan Tejpal’s direction is decent. The film is around 93 minutes long and keeps one on the edge of the seats, especially in the second half. Also, it’s relatable as it’s derived from incidents of innocent men being attacked on suspicion of being child kidnappers. The director also makes sure that the film is unexpected from the very beginning. One assumes that the function in the Bansal family must be the marriage of one of the children but it turns out to be something else. Similarly, the track of Jhumpa has been well executed. After every 10-15 minutes, the opinion of the viewer would change about her. Is she a victim or is she a criminal herself? – this question will keep playing on one’s mind. The second half is much more hard-hitting and the film ends on a justified note.

On the flipside, a few developments seem unconvincing, especially how Gautam and Raman get entangled in the whole affair of the missing child. The back story is not much established and this also dents impact. It’s also bewildering that the family is completely forgotten. Moreover, a few scenes are disturbing while the execution is niche and film festival-type. Hence, it is not a film for every section of the audience, even on OTT.

Stolen Movie Review Performances:
Abhishek Banerjee is superb in his first leading role in a feature film. His character goes through a lot – from an arrogant chap who can get away with the help of money to the one who gets humbled by the circumstances – and he gets it right perfectly. Shubham Vardhan has a fine screen presence and plays his part with aplomb. He’s sure to get noticed by the film industry, thanks to this film. Mia Maelzer is an even bigger surprise and is an actor to watch out for. Harish Khanna (Pandit ji; constable), Sahidur Rahaman (Inspector Shakti Singh) and Saarthak Dewan (Acchelal) lend able support. Bhanu (Tea Boy) is fair.

Stolen movie music and other technical aspects:
Arpad Bondy’s music is minimal yet effective. Isshaan Ghosh’s cinematography adds to the realism and also the impact. The same goes for Babbu Khanna’s action, Neeraj Kumar Singh’s production design and Harsh Dedhia’s costumes. Special mention should also go to Uma Sejwal’s makeup, hair and prosthetics. Shreyas Beltangdy’s editing is slick.

Stolen Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, STOLEN leaves an impact due to its stark realism, performances and edge-of-the-seat moments.

KARATE KID: LEGENDS is a straightforward, action-packed entertainer targeted at families and fans Movie Review: KARATE KID: LEGENDS is an action-packed entertainer

Star Cast: Ben Wang, Jackie Chan, Sadie Stanley

Director: Jonathan Entwistle

Karate Kid: Legends Movie Review Synopsis:
KARATE KID: LEGENDS is the story of the fight between a kung fu prodigy and a karate champion. Li Fong (Ben Wang) is a teenager in Beijing, China who learns Kung Fu from Shifu Han (Jackie Chan) at his school in Beijing, China. Li’s mother (Ming-Na Wen), a doctor, accepts a lucrative offer in New York City, USA. She and Li shift to the Big Apple and the former asks the latter to quit martial arts. Li’s brother was killed due to the sport and hence, his mother is wary of Li getting sucked into martial arts. Li also realizes where his mother comes from and accepts her condition. In New York City, Li soon befriends Mia (Sadie Stanley), daughter of Victor Lipani (Joshua Jackson), a former boxer turned pizzeria owner. Li and Mia get close and one day, he gets attacked by Mia’s ex-boyfriend Connor Day (Aramis Knight). Though Li has learned Kung Fu, he is no match for Connor. Mia and Connor have a long history not just due to their relationship but also because Victor owes money to the ex-boyfriend’s sensei, O’Shea (Tim Rozon). How Li gets involved in this feud forms the rest of the film.

Karate Kid: Legends Movie Story Review:
The story is routine. Rob Lieber’s screenplay is fast-paced and peppered with humour, drama and of course, martial arts. However, the writing has issues in some places. The dialogues add to the entertainment.

Jonathan Entwistle’s direction is simple. The film has a mainstream appeal and can be enjoyed by both masses and classes. The film is just 95 minutes long and doesn’t waste time. The characters are neatly fleshed out; some scenes are unexpected and keep the interest going. For instance, such films usually depict the protagonist getting training from an expert master. Here, the protagonist is the expert, at least in the first half. Secondly, a scene in the second half involves two master sensei squabbling while the poor protagonist suffers; this one-of-a-kind scene will be loved. The finale is clapworthy, though one can see it coming from a mile.

On the flipside, KARATE KID: LEGENDS tells a story which has been beaten to death. Certain developments are bewildering. The scene where Mia goes back to Connor is unconvincing, despite the former’s justification later on. The mother’s character is half-baked and the same goes for the villain. Also, Connor fighting Li in school is fun but one wonders what the former was doing in the latter’s alma mater in the first place.

Karate Kid: Legends Movie Review Performances:
Ben Wang plays the lead part with aplomb. His fighting skills are impressive. Jackie Chan is hardly there in the first half but dominates the post-interval portion. He is adorable as always but one wishes he had done more action. Sadie Stanley makes her presence felt while Joshua Jackson leaves a huge mark. Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso) has a late entry but makes up for it with his act. Aramis Knight is fine as the villain but is let down by the writing. Ming-Na Wen and Tim Rozon are okay. Wyatt Oleff (Alan) is lovely.

Karate Kid: Legends movie music and other technical aspects:
Dominic Lewis’s music is well-woven into the narrative. Justin Brown’s cinematography is appropriate, particularly in the action scenes. Mirren Gordon-Crozier’s costumes are straight out of real life. Jon Billington and Maya Sigel’s production design is fair. The action is a highlight while the VFX, shockingly, is tacky in a couple of shots, a rarity in big Hollywood films. Dana E Glauberman’s editing is too fast-paced.

Karate Kid: Legends Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, KARATE KID: LEGENDS is a straightforward, action-packed entertainer targeted at families and fans of the franchise. Its mainstream appeal, the presence of a popular actor in the Hindi version, and the lack of competition this week are likely to ensure decent footfalls.

KAPKAPIII is plagued with a weak script and a climax that leaves questions unanswered Movie Review: KAPKAPIII is plagued with a weak script

Star Cast: Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor, Siddhi Idnani, Sonia Rathee

Director: Sangeeth Sivan

Kapkapiii Movie Review Synopsis:
KAPKAPIII is the story of a group of friends in trouble. Manu (Shreyas Talpade) lives in Faridabad with his friends Rivin (Abishek Kumar), Nanku (Jay Thakkar), Achyut (Dinker Sharma), Vijay (Dhirendra Tiwari) and Nirup (Varun Pande). Rivin is the only earning person in the group and he funds all of them. Nirup, meanwhile, is the most responsible and cooks for them and also cleans the house. Kavya (Siddhi Idnani) and Madhu (Sonia Rathee) come to live in the same building on the top floor and Manu falls for the former. Meanwhile, one day, while meeting a friend Sukhi, Manu sees a man named DJ conducting a séance using an Ouija board in the hope of finding a ghost he can talk to. Manu is fascinated by the idea; as a fun activity, he uses a carrom board as an Ouija Board and asks his friends to participate. Manu has no hope that he’ll be able to establish contact with any spirit. But it so happens that a spirit named Anamaika starts conversing with them and also answers their questions. To add to the madness, Manu’s childhood friend Kabir (Tusshar Kapoor) arrives and adds to the chaos. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Kapkapiii Movie Story Review:
KAPKAPIII is the remake of the 2023 Malayalam film ROMANCHAM. Saurabh Anand and Kumar Priyadarshi’s story could have made for a great horror comedy. But Saurabh Anand and Kumar Priyadarshi’s screenplay is messy and unfunny. Saurabh Anand and Kumar Priyadarshi’s dialogues are decent and some of them raise laughs.

The late Sangeeth Sivan’s direction is okay. To give credit where it’s due, he establishes the setting and the characters well. A few scenes do arrest attention. Moreover, it’s a relatable concept as many youngsters must have tried calling the spirits at some point in their lives.

On the flipside, when the script itself is faulty, even the director couldn’t do much to salvage the film. Some jokes don’t land well and also, the first half is too long; it tests the patience. A few developments are bewildering, especially the track of Rivin and Madhu’s courtship. The finale is engaging but the film leaves several questions unanswered till the very end. The film culminates with the promise of a sequel. However, instead of making viewers curious, it’ll frustrate them to know that despite a run time of 140 minutes, they will still not know the story behind the spirit. One might argue that the same formula was also applied in STREE [2018]. But that film was in a different league and had several plusses. All those factors are missing here.

Kapkapiii Official Trailer | Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor, Siddhi Idnani

Kapkapiii Movie Review Performances:
Shreyas Talpade delivers a convincing performance as a good-for-nothing chap. Tusshar Kapoor has a very late entry – he gets introduced 15 minutes after the second half. Though he does well, the audience would have already lost interest by the time his character enters the narrative. From the friends, Varun Pande leaves the maximum mark followed by Jay Thakkar, Abishek Kumar, Dinker Sharma and Dhirendra Tiwari. Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Rathee do well. Zakir Hussain (Radhe) and the actors playing Sukhi and DJ are fair. Ishita Raj Sharma is sizzling in the item song.

Kapkapiii movie music and other technical aspects:
Ajay Jayanthi’s music won’t have a shelf life but a few songs are well woven into the narrative. ‘Jaa Re Bala’ is catchy, especially its theme. ‘Aatmaji’ also manages to register. ‘Velle’ is okay and the item number ‘Titli’ only works due to the picturization. Ajay Jayanthi’s background score is satisfactory.

Deep Sawant’s cinematography is functional. Rupesh K R’s production design is a bit unrealistic but works overall. Devanshi Patel’s costumes are straight out of life. Eggwhite VFX’s VFX is decent. Bunty Nagi’s editing is weak.

Kapkapiii Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, KAPKAPIII is plagued with a weak script, dragging first half and a climax that leaves several questions unanswered. At the box office, it’ll struggle to find an audience despite belonging to the much-loved horror comedy genre.

KESARI VEER is a poor man’s CHHAAVA and BAAHUBALI. It’ll struggle due to limited buzz Movie Review: KESARI VEER is a poor man’s CHHAAVA and BAAHUBALI

Star Cast: Suniel Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Sooraj Pancholi, Akanksha Sharma

Director: Prince Dhiman, Kanubhai Chauhan

Kesari Veer Movie Review Synopsis:
KESARI VEER is the story of a few brave men trying to save their faith. The story is set in the 14th century. Hamirji Gohil (Sooraj Pancholi) belongs to the royal family of Arthilla in Saurashtra. He is roaming outside his kingdom and fighting injustice. This is when he comes across Rajal (Akanksha Sharma) and he falls for her. Her father Vegdaji (Suniel Shetty) doesn’t approve of their relationship and forces Hamirji to leave. Hamirji promises to be back and to marry her. Meanwhile, Zafar Khan (Vivek Oberoi), belonging to the Tughlaq Empire, has started his journey towards Saurashtra. He is cruel and plans to loot Somnath Temple of all its riches. The kings in the region are afraid of confronting Zafar due to the sheer size of his army. But Hamirji decides to battle it out to save Somnath. Vegdaji, who had left violence long back, also decides to step in. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Kesari Veer Movie Story Review:
Kanubhai Chauhan’s story is promising and has the trappings of a commercial entertainer. Kanubhai Chauhan and Shitiz Srivastava’s screenplay, however, is substandard, cliched and also problematic. Shitiz Srivastava’s dialogues are nothing special but a few one-liners are clapworthy.

Prince Dhiman, Kanubhai Chauhan’s direction is weak and also amateur. The way the storytelling progresses, it is clear that the director duo has failed to get the basics right. Certain developments happen randomly and the way one scene leads to another is incoherent. Technically, the film is below par with the VFX being very outdated. Moreover, certain scenes are too similar to BAAHUBALI, especially that of the lovers romancing while fighting the enemies through bow and arrow. Suniel lifting the shivling also gives a déjà vu of the Prabhas starrer. It is shocking the makers approved of this scene as it’ll be dubbed as a cheap copy. The climax is arresting but the very final scene will leave the audience in disbelief. Again, many shots at this point are similar to CHHAAVA. Of course, the makers haven’t been inspired by the Vicky Kaushal starrer and it’s just a case of bad timing.

Kesari Veer (Trailer) Suniel Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Akanksha Sharma, Sooraj Pancholi | Kanu Chauhan

Kesari Veer Movie Review Performances:
What works are a few action scenes. Also, the actors have been presented in a massy avatar and their performances are praiseworthy. Sooraj Pancholi genuinely delivers a sincere performance. He especially looks great in action scenes. Suniel Shetty is terrific. He looks very dashing and his action scenes make the film quite watchable. Akanksha Sharma springs a surprise. She has an arresting screen presence and performance-wise, she’s first-rate. Without a doubt, this is one of the best debuts in recent times. Vivek Oberoi is superb as the antagonist though parallels might be drawn with the characters of Aurangzeb in CHHAAVA and Khilji in PADMAAVAT. Aruna Irani (Charan Jagdamba), Kiran Kumar (Tughlaq king), Shiva Rindani (Qazi), Bhavya Gandhi (Lakha), Barkha Bisht, Himanshu Ashok Malhotra (Rasool), Hitu Kanodia and others are fair.

Kesari Veer movie music and other technical aspects:
Monty Sharma’s music fails to entice, though it belongs to the massy variety. Monty Sharma’s background score adds to the tension and entertainment but in some places, it is also slightly awkward.

Vikash Joshi’s cinematography enhances the scale of the film. Priyanka Grover Dhiman’s production design is a bit like a historical TV show. Chandrakant Sonawane, Shakil Prakash Shetty and Devang Parmar’s costumes are authentic. Kevin Kumar, Anand Shetty’s action is very disturbing. Filmbug VFX’s VFX is very poor and one of the biggest culprits of the film. Satya Sharma and Sumanth Sharma’s editing is dragging.

Kesari Veer Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, KESARI VEER comes across as a poor man’s CHHAAVA and BAAHUBALI. At the box office, it’ll struggle to survive due to limited buzz, tacky VFX, disturbing scenes and competition from new and holdover releases.

LILO & STITCH is a delightful entertainer that appeals to both kids and the entire family Movie Review: LILO & STITCH is a delightful entertainer

Star Cast: Maia Kealoha, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong

Director: Dean Fleischer Camp

Lilo & Stitch Movie Review Synopsis:
LILO & STITCH is the story of a lonely girl and a mischievous alien. On planet Turo, the United Galactic Federation convicts evil scientist Dr Jumba Jookiba (Zach Galifianakis) for creating a creature, code-named 626, though he wasn’t given the authorization to do so. Realizing that 626 is an aggressive and near-indestructible creature with advanced learning capabilities, the Federation, under the leadership of the Grand Councilwoman (voiced by Hannah Waddingham), decides to eliminate 626. 626, however, escapes. He hijacks a space cruiser and moves towards Earth where he crash lands on Kauaʻi, Hawaii. One thing leads to another, and he is taken to an animal shelter where he impersonates a dog. Here, a 6-year-old girl, Lilo (Maia Kealoha), sneaks him out with the help of an elderly helpful neighbour, Tūtū (Amy Hill) and adopts him. She names him ‘Stitch’. Lilo is going through a challenging time. Her parents are no more, and her elder sister Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong) is trying her best to take care of her while working at a restaurant. On top of it, Mrs Kekoa, a social worker, is concerned with the way Lilo is being brought up and her violent fights with her classmates. She orders Nani to get her act right; or else, the State will be compelled to place Lilo in foster care. At such a point in life, the presence of Stitch complicates matters even more. If that’s not enough, Dr Jumba and United Galactic Federation Earth expert Agent Pleakley (Billy Magnussen) are sent to Earth to capture Stitch and safely bring him back without letting the Earthlings know about their mission. And that’s not all. Stitch crashing his space vehicle alerts the CIA. Agent Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B Vance) is convinced that an extra-terrestrial creature is present on the island and he’s asked to capture it. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Lilo & Stitch Movie Story Review:
LILO & STITCH is adapted from the 2002 animated film of the same name. The story is impressive and different from the usual Disney family films. Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes’s screenplay is breezy and peppered with entertaining moments. However, the writing has a few loose ends. The dialogues add to the fun and are also emotional in some scenes.

Dean Fleischer Camp’s direction is decent. The film is longer than the animated version by nearly 20 minutes. Yet, he ensures that it doesn’t seem stretched or boring. A lot is happening every moment. The character of Stitch is naughty and at the same time very adorable. Hence, the kids especially would lap it up. What is also striking is the bond shared by the sisters. This aspect paid dividends to Disney in FROZEN [2013]; LILO & STITCH can also benefit. The climax is the best part of the enterprise. It is thrilling and also quite moving.

On the flipside, a few jokes don’t land well, more so in the first half. Two things are quite bewildering. Firstly, no one raises an eyebrow when Stitch passes off as a dog. This aspect didn’t cause an issue in the animated version but this is a live-action flick and here, it doesn’t look convincing when Stitch is impersonating a canine. Secondly, Nani loses work opportunities because of Stitch but she doesn’t seem to mind much. This is also difficult to digest as she needs the job to save her sister from foster care.

Lilo & Stitch Movie Review Performances:
Maia Kealoha is very cute and shoulders the lead role with full conviction. Sydney Elizebeth Agudong is an actor to watch out for. She delivers a praiseworthy performance. Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen are great and add to the entertainment value. Courtney B Vance lends able support but is let down by the writing. Amy Hill leaves a huge mark and her character will be loved. Maia Kealoha and Kaipo Dudoit (David Kawena) lend able support. Hannah Waddingham’s voiceover is apt. Lastly, Chris Sanders is lovely as the voice of Stitch.

Lilo & Stitch movie music and other technical aspects:
Dan Romer’s music is well-woven and pays tribute to the Hawaiian setting. Nigel Bluck’s cinematography is spectacular. Todd Cherniawsky’s production design is authentic and Wendy Chuck’s costumes are realistic. The VFX is top-class. Adam Gerstel and Phillip J Bartell’s editing is a bit slow in the first half but satisfactory overall.

Lilo & Stitch Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, LILO & STITCH is a delightful entertainer that appeals to both kids and the entire family. With its release timed perfectly for the summer holidays, it holds strong potential to attract audiences, especially at urban multiplexes.

BHOOL CHUK MAAF rests on a novel idea but suffers due to predictability and stagnant writing Movie Review: BHOOL CHUK MAAF suffers due to predictability and stagnant writing

Star Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Wamiqa Gabbi

Director: Karan Sharma

Bhool Chuk Maaf Movie Review Synopsis:
BHOOL CHUK MAAF is the story of a groom-to-be in trouble. Ranjan Tripathi (Rajkummar Rao) is based in Lucknow and lives with his mother (Seema Pahwa), father (Raghubir Yadav) and sister Keri (Pragati Mishra). He is in love with local resident Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi) and both want to get married. But Titli’s father (Zakir Hussain) is against this idea as Ranjan is unemployed. Titli is hell-bent on marrying him. Hence, the father insists that Ranjan should find a government job within two months. If he manages to do so, he’ll get his daughter married to him. Ranjan goes to insane lengths and finally bags a job in the irrigation department. He and Titli are all set to tie the knot on May 30. On May 29, Ranjan’s haldi ceremony is held. The next day, Ranjan wakes up only to see his family getting ready for the Haldi ceremony! He is bewildered, more so when his family members claim that the date is the 29th and not the 30th. Ranjan assumes that he dreamt the whole episode of Haldi. But the next day, he wakes up and realizes that the date still hasn’t changed to May 30! To add to his dilemma, no one around him is ready to believe him. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Bhool Chuk Maaf Movie Story Review:
Karan Sharma’s story is novel. Karan Sharma’s screenplay (additional screenplay by Haider Rizvi) has its share of engaging and entertaining moments but the writing suffers in several scenes. Karan Sharma’s dialogues (additional dialogues by Haider Rizvi) are hilarious and sharp. However, so many toilet jokes could have been avoided.

Karan Sharma’s direction is decent, more so considering that it’s his debut flick. Despite such an unusual subject, he tries his best to make you believe that what’s happening with Ranjan is very much possible. A few scenes stand out like the madness at the police station and Titli trolling a potential match followed by Ranjan’s dramatic entry. Post-interval, the sequence where Ranjan decides to speak kind-heartedly to everyone will be loved. The finale is sweet.

Sadly, the film is not without its share of blemishes. The makers have ended up showing too much in the trailer. Hence, though the first half is lovely, it is largely predictable. It’s in the second half where the film finally goes into the unexpected zone. Even here, the film suffers as the narrative stagnates in between. A few developments are silly. It’s unconvincing that Ranjan took a while to realise what ‘nek kaarya’ is all about. He also takes a long time to convince Hamid Ansari (Akash Makhija). Anyone in Ranjan’s shoes would not have jumped into the waters so many times. He would have given his all to persuade Hamid so that he could get out of the mess. Lastly, the music is not upto the mark.

Bhool Chuk Maaf | Official Trailer | Rajkummar Rao | Wamiqa Gabbi | Dinesh Vijan | Karan Sharma

Bhool Chuk Maaf Movie Review Performances:
Rajkummar Rao rises above the script and delivers an entertaining as well as touching performance. Wamiqa Gabbi shines in her first major theatrical role. Her expressions, especially, are quite superb. Sanjay Mishra (Bhagwandas) leaves a huge mark in a small role. Ishtiyak Khan (Kishan) and Dheerendra Gautam (Hari) lend able support and raise laughs. Pragati Mishra manages to register her presence. Akash Makhija, Seema Pahwa, Raghubir Yadav, Zakir Hussain, Anubha Fatehpuria (Titli’s mother), Jay Thakkar (Sushil), Vineet Kumar (priest), Himanshu Kohli (Jija) and others are fine. Dhanashree Verma (Jugni) is sizzling in the item number.

Bhool Chuk Maaf movie music and other technical aspects:
Tanishk Bagchi’s music doesn’t have a shelf life. This is shocking since Maddock Films is known for hit music. ‘Chor Bazari Phir Se’ is the only one that is memorable. ‘Sawariya Tera’ and ‘Koi Naa’ work mainly due to their placement and picturization. The same goes for ‘Hutt Badmaash’. ‘Ting Ling Sajna’ is a forgettable item number and is forced. Ketan Sodha’s background score is quirky, just like the film’s theme.

Sudeep Chatterjee’s cinematography is satisfactory. Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty’s production design is classy and straight out of life. Sheetal Iqbal Sharma’s costumes are realistic. Manish Madan Pradhan’s editing could have been crisper.

Bhool Chuk Maaf Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, BHOOL CHUK MAAF rests on a novel idea and the entertaining performance of Rajkummar Rao. But the film suffers due to a predictable first half as well as weak and stagnant writing. At the box office, the film might face a tough time, especially due to its premiere on an OTT platform in just two weeks.

Discovering Kansas City: Cultural Landmarks That Celebrate Its Soul (Part 4 of 4)

Discovering Kansas City: Cultural Landmarks That Celebrate Its Soul (Part 4 of 4)

Kansas City’s cultural landmarks serve as both guardians of its rich history and gateways to its creative future. From world-class museums and vibrant theaters to beloved community institutions, the city’s cultural fabric is both deep and diverse. In this final chapter of our series, we highlight the cultural institutions that define Kansas City’s identity and continue to inspire generations.

At the heart of the city’s artistic offerings is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, an architectural and cultural treasure. With collections spanning centuries and continents—most notably its celebrated Asian art wing—the museum also features the modern Bloch Building and a sculpture garden made instantly recognizable by its giant Shuttlecock installations.

Just around the corner, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art provides a bold counterpoint. Housed in a striking building with sweeping lines and reflective surfaces, the museum showcases contemporary works that challenge, inspire, and reflect modern society. With free admission and a rotating exhibit calendar, it invites ongoing discovery.

No exploration of Kansas City’s culture would be complete without visiting 18th & Vine, home to the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The Jazz Museum brings to life the city’s musical legacy with interactive exhibits on greats like Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald. Just steps away, the Negro Leagues Museum preserves the stories of baseball legends and celebrates resilience in the face of segregation, with immersive exhibits and emotional storytelling.

For outdoor entertainment, the Starlight Theatre in Swope Park remains a summer staple. This open-air amphitheater, with roots dating back to 1950, hosts Broadway musicals, concerts, and community performances under the stars. Its charm lies in both its scale and its intimacy, offering a uniquely Kansas City experience.

In downtown, the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch turns even a parking structure into an attraction. Its “Community Bookshelf” features a façade of massive book spines—literary classics that pay homage to the city’s readers and writers. It’s a whimsical and beloved sight for visitors and locals alike.

Another gem is the Arabia Steamboat Museum, where history surfaces—literally. This museum houses artifacts recovered from the Steamboat Arabia, which sank in the Missouri River in 1856. Walking through its preserved cargo is like stepping back in time, revealing what everyday life looked like before the Civil War.

Each of these institutions tells a part of Kansas City’s ongoing cultural story—one of creativity, courage, and community. They are the places where history lives, music plays, and the city’s soul shines brightest.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING delivers a thrilling and satisfying conclusion Movie Review: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING is a paisa vasool entertainer

Star Cast: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames

Director: Christopher McQuarrie

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Movie Review Synopsis:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING is the story of a man trying to save the world. Two months after the events of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING – PART ONE [2023], Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) gets a message from the President of the United States, Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett). She informs him that he needs to help the US government find the source code of the Entity, with the help of the key which he retrieved on the Orient Express from Gabriel (Esai Morales). The Entity has begun to rear its ugly head, causing unrest across the world and even attacking servers. Erika doesn’t want Ethan to destroy the Entity as she fears that it’ll destroy cyberspace. Hence, she asks Ethan to join hands with her to allow her to control the Entity and thereby save the world. Meanwhile, Luther (Ving Rhames) has created a ‘poison pill’, a thumb drive, which can destroy the Entity. Sadly, the ‘poison pill’ gets stolen and it needs to be retrieved. At the same time, Ethan has to find the exact place where the submarine, Sevastopol, containing the source code of the Entity, sank, and retrieve it. The submarine lies on the ocean bed and even reaching there will be next to impossible. While all this is going on, Ethan and his associates Benji (Simon Pegg), Grace (Hayley Atwell) and Paris (Pom Klementieff) need to find a way to which the Entity can be destroyed without it affecting cyberspace. If all this is not enough, the Entity is slowly seizing control of the nuclear arsenals of the world, thereby threatening human extinction. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Movie Story Review:
Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen’s story is nail-biting. Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen’s screenplay is a bit dry in the initial portions but is peppered with enough ‘Mission Impossible’ missions to keep the interest going. The dialogues are normal but the one between Ethan and the US President stands out.

Christopher McQuarrie’s direction is cinematic and commercial. The director maintains a balance – he tells a story in the best possible way and at the same time, he is aware that he needs to serve the fans. A significant scene gives a recap of sorts of Ethan’s extraordinary journey in the IMF. The makers also surprise the audience by bringing the most unexpected characters back in the series; one such character was seen in the first part, way back in 1996! The missions that Ethan undertakes also make for an exciting watch. This time, a lot is at stake and not just Ethan, but his associates also need to make their move and they can’t even be a second late. This adds to the tension levels. In the first half, the scene where Ethan gets attacked on the ship while an action sequence also takes place in Alaska simultaneously is memorable. Post-interval, the underwater scene is quite arresting. The finale, meanwhile, is clapworthy.

On the flipside, the first half is mostly reserved for build-up. Those expecting non-stop action will be dejected. A few scenes are convenient, like Ethan leaving the ‘poison pill’ with Luther. The makers also leave a few questions unanswered about the Entity. The bigger issue is that on paper, all the missions seem exciting. But it also comes at a time when we have already seen Ethan doing enough death-defying stunts several times. As a result, viewers might not get the kick as intended. Moreover, the previous part also set a benchmark and the action scenes in it were more, both in the first and second halves, as compared to this one.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Movie Review Performances:
Tom Cruise, yet again, is simply unbelievable. To see him hanging by the plane (and a lot more), that too at this age, is commendable. He also shines in the emotional scenes. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames are adorable and add to the madness. Hayley Atwell makes her presence felt. Esai Morales is decent as the villain. Pom Klementieff has a crucial part and gives a badass performance. Angela Bassett is apt as the Head of State. Henry Czerny (Eugene Kittridge), Shea Whigham (Jasper Briggs) and Greg Tarzan Davis (Degas) lend able support. Hannah Waddingham (Admiral Neely) and Tramell Tillman (Captain Bledsoe) have small parts but leave a mark. Rolf Saxon (William Donloe) and Lucy Tulugarjuk (Tapeesa, Donloe’s wife) are damn good and their track is a surprise.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning movie music and other technical aspects:
Max Aruj and Alfie Godfrey’s music is exhilarating. Lalo Schifrin’s legendary MISSION IMPOSSIBLE theme is played in the beginning and end credits. Fraser Taggart’s cinematography is spectacular, especially in the airplane scene. Gary Freeman’s production design is top-notch while Jill Taylor’s costumes are stylish. The VFX matches global standards. Eddie Hamilton’s editing could have been faster.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING delivers a thrilling and satisfying conclusion to one of cinema’s most beloved action franchises. With high-octane sequences, edge-of-the-seat moments, and Tom Cruise once again defying gravity and expectations, this is a true paisa vasool entertainer. At the box office, the film is poised for a thunderous start at the box office and is well on track to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark with ease.

FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES takes the series to another level and is a ‘killer’ entertainer Movie Review: FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES is a ‘killer’ entertainer.

Star Cast: Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Brec Bassinger, Gabrielle Rose, Teo Briones

Director: Zach Lipovsky, Adam Stein

Final Destination Bloodlines Movie Review Synopsis:
FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES is the story of a young woman trying to save her family. Iris Campbell (Brec Bassinger) and her fiancé, Paul (Max Lloyd-Jones) attend the opening ceremony of the Sky View Tower. It is the tallest structure in the region, offers a 360-degree view and also comprises a restaurant-cum-bar. Due to a series of mishaps, the tower collapses, killing everyone. More than fifty years have passed. A college student, Stefani Reyes (Kaitlyn Santa Juana), gets visions of the Sky View Tower incident on a daily basis, affecting her studies. She realizes that there is a family connection to it, as Iris happened to be the name of her mother’s mother. But getting information about her is next to impossible. Stefani’s mother, Darlene (Rya Kihlstedt), abandoned her, brother Charlie (Teo Briones) and hubby Marty (Tinpo Lee) when Stefani was a child. Marty refuses to speak about Iris. Hence, she approaches her maternal uncle Howard (Alex Zahara) and his family – wife Brenda (April Telek), sons Bobby (Owen Patrick Joyner) and Erik (Richard Harmon) and daughter Julia (Anna Lore). This is when she learns a disturbing fact about Iris and later, she concludes that Death is approaching her and her family. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Final Destination Bloodlines Movie Story Review:
Jon Watts, Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor’s story is fantastic. Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor’s screenplay is creative and thankfully, the narrative structure is different from the other FINAL DESTINATION films. The dialogues add to the tension and also the laughter.

Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein’s direction is worthy. All the previous installments of the series followed a set pattern and hence, it became repetitive as one knew where the film was heading. FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES breaks that pattern. One would be intrigued to know where the film is going and some scenes would give viewers a jolt. This time, the humour quotient is also quite prominent and adds to the madness. What is also striking in this film is that the effects and the eeriness are top-class. The manner in which the Sky View Tower sequence has been filmed is terrifying. The tattoo shop and hospital scenes are also memorable.

On the flipside, the concept of how Death is coming after people and their offspring is a bit far-fetched and convenient. It is interesting how a character cheated death for years, but not much information was given on the same as to how she did it exactly. Although the film is largely unpredictable, the final scene doesn’t have any element of surprise. It makes for a fun watch; however, those who have seen the previous parts will know where the film is going at this point.

Final Destination Bloodlines Movie Review Performances:
Kaitlyn Santa Juana plays the leading role with conviction. Brec Bassinger, in a supporting role, leaves the maximum impact. Special mention should also go to Gabrielle Rose (also plays the role of Iris). Teo Briones delivers a fine performance. Richard Harmon steals the show; his scenes in the second half are very exciting and will be lapped up by the audience. Alex Zahara is lovely, especially in the barbecue scene. Owen Patrick Joyner, meanwhile, is impressive because of the hospital scene and the sequence before that. Max Lloyd-Jones, Tinpo Lee, Rya Kihlstedt and Anna Lore are decent. The late Tony Todd (William Bludworth) is damn good while Jayden Oniah (little kid in the Sky View Tower) and Travis Turner (elevator operator) do well. Lastly, Noah Bromley (Penny kid) rocks the show and his scene will get a roaring response in cinemas.

Final Destination Bloodlines movie music and other technical aspects:
Tim Wynn’s music is appropriate. Christian Sebaldt’s cinematography is spectacular and enhances the tension levels. Rachel O’Toole’s production design is top-notch. Michelle Hunter’s costumes are realistic while in the flashback scenes, they are reminiscent of the bygone era. Sabrina Pitre’s editing is a bit slow-paced in some scenes and this is also the longest film of the series. Yet, there are no complaints as the scenes are well stitched together.

Final Destination Bloodlines Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES is a ‘killer’ entertainer and takes the series to another level. At the box office, it is expected to start slow and would also face the heat from the bigger release of the week – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING. But it has the potential to grow and have a long, steady run at the box office. With its creatively gruesome deaths and shock-a-minute storytelling, this is the kind of edge-of-the-seat experience best enjoyed in a packed cinema — surrounded by gasps, shrieks, and wild applause from the audience!

Discovering Kansas City: Architectural Icons That Define the Skyline (Part 3 of 4)

Discovering Kansas City: Architectural Icons That Define the Skyline (Part 3 of 4)

Kansas City’s architectural landscape is a testament to both historic grandeur and modern innovation. From soaring Art Deco towers to bold, futuristic structures, the city offers a diverse collection of buildings that reflect its rich cultural evolution and civic pride. In this third installment of our four-part series, we explore some of the most iconic architectural landmarks that shape the visual identity of Kansas City.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts stands as a stunning symbol of the city’s cultural ambition. Designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, this gleaming structure features two performance halls beneath a dramatic glass façade that overlooks downtown. Its design—both artistic and acoustic—makes it one of the most visually compelling performance venues in the country.

A short distance away, Union Station recalls a different era. Opened in 1914, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece once welcomed hundreds of thousands of rail passengers. Today, its majestic Grand Hall, with 95-foot ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and a six-foot-wide clock, continues to inspire awe as it hosts museums, exhibits, and community events.

Kansas City City Hall, completed in 1937, rises 29 stories in classic Art Deco style. With its limestone façade, bronze details, and rooftop observation deck, it remains one of the tallest city halls in the U.S., offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the architectural vision of the 1930s.

Nearby, Bartle Hall Convention Center makes a different kind of statement. Its roof is supported by four towering pylons crowned with futuristic “Sky Stations”—illuminated sculptures that bring a splash of sci-fi flair to the skyline, especially striking against the night sky.

Then there’s the Kansas City Power & Light Building, an Art Deco skyscraper completed in 1931, notable for its tiered setbacks and illuminated crown. Once the tallest building in Missouri, it remains a beloved downtown icon whose amber glow has become a nighttime signature.

Not to be overlooked is Municipal Auditorium, a masterpiece of Streamline Moderne design that opened in the midst of the Great Depression. Its lavish interiors, including gilded ceilings and intricate murals, reflect a time when public architecture was a canvas for artistic expression.

Finally, the Community Christian Church, designed by none other than Frank Lloyd Wright, is both spiritual and sculptural. The building’s clean geometric lines and the striking “Steeple of Light” beam that projects into the sky at night make it a subtle yet futuristic landmark in the Country Club Plaza district.

These architectural gems, whether historic or contemporary, do more than shape the city—they tell its story in brick, stone, glass, and light.

Stay tuned for Part 4, where we explore Kansas City’s most treasured cultural institutions and the stories they preserve.

Discovering Kansas City: Sculptures & Installations – Part 2 of 4

Discovering Kansas City: Sculptures & Installations – Part 2 of 4

If Kansas City’s memorials speak to its history, its public art energizes the present with bold creativity and imagination. Wander the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and you’ll find giant shuttlecocks—yes, badminton birdies—scattered across the lawn. These playful Shuttlecocks have become one of the most photographed spots in the city, and for good reason. Their unexpected scale and whimsical placement turn the museum’s stately architecture into a delightful, memorable experience. They remind us that art doesn’t always have to be serious—it can be lighthearted, fun, and still deeply moving.

In Penn Valley Park, another symbol quietly watches over the city—The Scout, a bronze statue of a Native American on horseback. Originally brought in as a temporary exhibition, it won so many hearts that it found a permanent home here. Gazing out over the skyline, this statue has become a symbol of the city’s identity and its cultural depth. Nearby, the Sky Stations—futuristic forms perched atop the Kansas City Convention Center—seem to float above the skyline, glowing at night like something from another world.

Our final stop is the Staple of Light, a beam of light that shoots into the sky from the roof of Community Christian Church. Designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the church’s spire is made not of stone or steel, but of pure illumination. It’s a brilliant fusion of architecture and innovation—and a fitting metaphor for Kansas City’s spirit: rooted in tradition, but always reaching upward.

In Part 3, we’ll explore the city’s cultural soul—from a jazz legend in bronze to towering murals that turn everyday spaces into stories.

RAID 2 makes a strong and enduring impact, driven by its gripping drama, culminating in a climactic sequence. Movie Review: RAID 2 makes a strong and enduring impact.

Star Cast: Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh

Director: Raj Kumar Gupta

Raid 2 Movie Review Synopsis:
RAID 2 is the story of an honest officer and a corrupt-cum-shrewd politician. The year is 1989. Income Tax Officer Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgn) raids the palace of Raja Kunwar (Govind Namdeo) in Jaipur and confiscates truckloads of black money. Raja’s manager offers a bribe and surprisingly, Amay accepts the offer. He gets caught and is transferred to Bhoj. The town is ruled by Manohar Dhankar aka Dada Bhai (Riteish Deshmukh). He’s also a cabinet minister and is seen as a philanthropist. Hence, the residents of Bhoj worship him and are ready to go to any lengths for him. Amay is surprised to see that he’s unable to find a single clue of money hoarding or corruption against Dada Bhai or any other resident. Realizing that something is fishy, Amay starts looking around and interacts with the local residents to find out more information. Soon, he comes across evidence that makes it clear that Dada Bhai is corrupt. Amay’s senior Anjani Kaul (Rajat Kapoor) approves the raid. Amay and his team of officers at the Income Tax Department, Bhoj commence the raid at Dada Bhai’s residence, office, and a five-star property. Amay is confident that he’ll find a lot of black money hidden in his properties. Sadly, he’s unable to find a single instance of unaccounted money. Amay soon realizes that Dada Bhai is possibly the shrewdest corrupt suspect that he has come across. Amay is compelled to change his strategies so that he can expose Dada Bhai. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Raid 2 Movie Story Review:
Ritesh Shah, Raj Kumar Gupta, Jaideep Yadav and Karan Vyas’s story is one level up compared to the first part, RAID [2018]. Ritesh Shah, Raj Kumar Gupta, Jaideep Yadav and Karan Vyas’s screenplay is captivating and is peppered with some entertaining and dramatic moments. In a few places, however, the writing could have been tighter. Ritesh Shah, Raj Kumar Gupta, Jaideep Yadav, and Karan Vyas’s dialogues are witty and add to the humour quotient.

Raj Kumar Gupta’s direction is simple. He also makes sure that the film has enough commercial value so that it can reach out to a large section of the audience. He also has a certain sensibility, which he doesn’t compromise on. The balance achieved is praiseworthy. He has chosen an intriguing plot. The challenges Amay faces this time are a lot more, as the antagonist is way more sharp-minded and a genius compared to the villain in the first part. The character of the mother (Supriya Pathak Kapur) and the depiction of Sushma Jankalyan Foundation stand out. The first half is decent and Raj Kumar Gupta reserves the best for the second half. This is where the film shows his true brilliance.

On the flipside, Dada Bhai’s rise in politics seems unconvincing and sudden. One can understand him winning the local election and maybe becoming a minister in the state government. Instead, he is catapulted as a central cabinet minister! The interest levels dip in the first half. Even the investigation of Amay Patnaik in the post-interval portions, though important to the film, doesn’t excite the audience much. The character of Punit Sahni (the Sardar batchmate of Amay; played by Sandeep Kapoor) fails to make a mark. The character of Raja Kunwar is introduced in a dramatic fashion, but hardly has anything to do.

RAID 2 begins on a fine note. Amay’s entry is predictable, but nevertheless, it works well. Dada Bhai’s entry is even more dramatic, and it’s a very unusual intro scene for a villain. The scene where Amay meets the Bhoj office colleagues is interesting. The interest then rises once Amay conducts the raid. The intermission point promises a smashing second half. The second half commences well with an item number. The film then falls and thankfully, gets better with the entry of Lallan Sudheer (Amit Sial). From here, the film remains steady. The climax is the best part of the enterprise and would be greeted with applause.

Raid 2 (Trailer): Ajay Devgn | Riteish Deshmukh | Vaani Kapoor

Raid 2 Movie Review Performances:
Ajay Devgn is in his element yet again. He keeps his act restrained and that works for his character. However, in a few scenes, his dialogues are not audible. Riteish Deshmukh is terrific and does complete justice to the part of the antagonist. In several scenes, his eyes do all the talking, which is also quite commendable. After EK VILLAIN [2014], the actor proves yet again that he’s versatile and that filmmakers should see him in roles beyond comedy as well. Vaani Kapoor (Malini) hardly has anything to do. Amit Sial is the surprise package and contributes immensely to the laughter quotient. Performance-wise, he’s first-rate. Another scene stealer in the film is Shruti Pandey (Geeta ji). Supriya Pathak Kapur plays a crucial character and is lovely. Rajat Kapoor lends able support. Saurabh Shukla (Rameshwar Singh aka Tauji) is great. However, his character barely has much to do. The same goes for Govind Namdeo. Yashpal Sharma (Devinder Gehlot) does well, as always. However, one expects more from him because of the way his character was introduced. Pritisha Srivastava (Mini) is cute. Sanjeev Jhori (Ashok), Brijendra Kala (Vinay Bakaya) and Ayushi Neema (Anita) lend able support. Samayar Singh (Vikram Ghadiyal) and Ikram Khan (Kamal Chauhan; IAS officer) are okay. Tamannaah Bhatia is sizzling.

Raid 2 movie music and other technical aspects:
‘Kamle’ and ‘Tumhe Dillagi’ fail to impress and act as speed breakers. ‘Nasha’ is catchy and will be loved by the front benchers. ‘Money Money’, played during the end credits, is also enticing. Amit Trivedi’s background score (additional background score by Amar Mohile) is one of the strong points of the film.

Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary’s cinematography is satisfactory. Rita Ghosh’s production design is in sync with the bygone era. Naveen Shetty, Mehak Shetty and Priyanka Castelino’s costumes are realistic. The same goes for R P Yadav’s action. Sandeep Francis’s editing could have been sharper in the first half.

Raid 2 Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, RAID 2 makes a strong and enduring impact, driven by its gripping drama, a formidable antagonist, and a second half that strikes an engaging balance between entertainment and intensity – culminating in a climactic sequence that stands out as the film’s crowning achievement. At the box office, the film is well-positioned to capitalize on a four-day weekend and the advantage of minimal competition in the immediate release calendar.

THE BHOOTNII is a poorly written and executed film. Movie Review: THE BHOOTNII is a poorly written and executed.

Star Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Palak Tiwari, Sunny Singh

Director: Sidhaant Sachdev

The Bhootnii Movie Review Synopsis:
THE BHOOTNII is the story of a ghost creating havoc in an educational institution. Shantanu (Sunny Singh) is a student at St Vincent College, Delhi. He is heartbroken as his girlfriend has dumped him. The college campus has a place called The Virgin Tree. It is believed that praying at the tree can help single people find love, more so on Valentine’s Day. Just after midnight of February 14, Shantanu, devastated, by the break-up, demands true love from the Virgin Tree. Unknown to Shantanu, The Virgin Tree is possessed. The spirit residing in the tree (Mouni Roy) gets active on hearing his plea. Meanwhile, mysterious episodes take place in the college. The students realize that that tree is haunted but the college management refuses to comment, fearing negative publicity. As a solution to the menace, they call a ghostbuster, Krishna Tripathi (Sanjay Dutt). On the other hand, the spirit assumes human form and bumps into Shantanu. She claims that her name is Mohabbat and attempts to begin an affair with Shantanu. Soon, Shantanu realizes her true identity and also the fact that his life is in danger and also that of his friends, that is, Ananya (Palak Tiwari), Sahil (Nick) and Nasir (Faisal Khan). What happens next forms the rest of the film.

The Bhootnii Movie Story Review:
Sidhaant Sachdev’s story is ordinary but has the trappings of a fun entertainer. Vankush Arora and Sidhaant Sachdev’s screenplay is weak and unexciting. Vankush Arora and Sidhaant Sachdev’s dialogues fail to impress. Some dialogues are funny but they get repetitive, diluting its impact. Also, using surrogate names instead of real-life names of celebs is laughable (for the wrong reasons).

Sidhaant Sachdev’s direction is not upto the mark. The writing has issues but still, a skillful director would have taken care of the loose ends and come up with a fun-filled entertainer. Sadly, the director fails and how. Some scenes genuinely raise laughs. Also, the backstory of the ghost is promising. But again, the execution spoils the show. Moreover, for a film that is horror comedy, the goings-on are neither that funny nor scary. The way the love story of the ghostbusters is presented, moreover, is quite sudden.

The Bhootnii – Official Trailer | Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh

The Bhootnii Movie Review Performances:
Sanjay Dutt plays his part with conviction. His character is quite cool and with better dialogues, it would have been very well received. Mouni Roy looks ravishing and is apt for the role. Sunny Singh and Palak Tiwari are just alright. Nick is strictly okay while Faisal Khan is superb. Others do well.

The Bhootnii movie music and other technical aspects:
The music is poor and all songs – ‘Rang Laga’, ‘Mahakaal Mahakaali’, ‘Tararara’, ‘Nakhre’ and the title song – are forgettable. A film like this should have had a super hit song to grab eyeballs. Amar Mohile’s background score is appropriate.

Santosh Thundiyil’s cinematography is satisfactory. Dipankar Dasgupta and Sunayana Gopal Paradkar’s production design is drama-like. Anna Singh-Navin Shetty’s costumes for Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Mundada’s costumes for the rest of the actors’ costumes are stylish while Redefine’s VFX is tacky. Real Satish’s action is appropriate. Bunty Nagi’s editing is functional.

The Bhootnii Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, THE BHOOTNII is a poorly written and executed film. At the box office, it’ll get impacted by limited buzz and competition from RAID 2.

COSTAO rests on Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance but it falters due to a slow narrative Movie Review: COSTAO rests on Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance.

Star Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priya Bapat

Director: Sejal Shah

Costao Movie Review Synopsis:
COSTAO is the story of a brave man being tormented by the system. The year is 1991. Costao Fernandes (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a brave Customs officer in Goa. He lives with his wife Mariya (Priya Bapat), son Chris (Abeer Jain) and daughter Marissa (Asmi Deo). For Costao, duty comes first and he has got a tip that 1500 kilos of gold belonging to a local politician and smuggler D’Mello (Kishore Kumar G), will land in Goa. Costao keeps an eye on the various beaches but to no avail. One day, an informer (Shravan Fondekar) informs Costao that the ship has landed and also divulges the name of the beach where the gold is being unloaded. Costao reaches the smuggling point and sees D’Mello’s brother Peter (Hussain Dalal) transporting the gold in his car. Costao chases Peter and asks him to stop the car. A fight ensues between the two and Costao accidentally kills Peter. The villagers are about to confront Costao and he opens the trunk of the car to prove that Peter was indeed smuggling gold. He contacts his senior, Naik (Rohhit Tiwari), about the demise and gold. Realizing that his life is in danger, Costao runs away. By the time Naik reaches the crime spot, the gold has vanished from the car. Thus, the media and the Goans are made to believe that Costao killed an innocent man and is on the run. A day later, Costao surrenders and the case goes to court. Sadly, victory seems remote as Costao has no way to prove that he was acting on a tip and that Peter died accidentally. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Costao Movie Story Review:
Bhavesh Mandalia and Meghna Srivastava’s story is inspired by real-life events. Bhavesh Mandalia and Meghna Srivastava’s screenplay is a bit slow and arrests attention in some places. Bhavesh Mandalia and Meghna Srivastava’s dialogues are normal but some one-liners are very funny.

Sejal Shah’s direction is alright. One gets moved by the protagonist’s woes and also how his family also suffers. The first half has some gripping scenes. The chase sequence stands out. Another track that works is that of the CBI officer Narang (Gagan Dev Riar).

On the flipside, the narrative is a bit slow and hence, one loses interest in some places. A minor issue is that this is not a typical hero vs villain story. Hence, it doesn’t culminate as intended in this regard. But the biggest issue is the finale. On one hand, it comes across as a pleasant surprise. But on the other hand, no explanation is given on how the tables get turned. The makers should have explained the reason for the turn of events.

Costao | Official Trailer | A ZEE5 Original | Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priya Bapat

Costao Movie Review Performances:
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, as always, delivers a supreme performance. His deadpan humour adds to his act. Priya Bapat’s character is the soul of the film and she does full justice. Kishore Kumar G, who was recently seen in L2 EMPURAAN and SIKANDAR, is fair. Hussain Dalal leaves a huge mark in a small role. Gagan Dev Riar performs aptly. Shravan Fondekar and Rohhit Tiwari lend able support. Asmi Deo is cute. Mahika Sharma (Peter’s widow) does well.

Costao movie music and other technical aspects:
All songs – ‘Danke Ki Chot’, ‘Pedro’ and ‘Kinaarey’ – are forgettable. Ketan Sodha’s background score is nothing special.

Rafey Mahmood’s cinematography is functional. Sapna Chandra’s production design and Sachin Lovelekar’s costumes are realistic. Abbas Ali Moghul’s action is minimal and cinematic. Unnikrishnan P P’s editing could have been crisper.

Costao Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, COSTAO rests on Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance and some arresting moments. But it falters due to a slow narrative and a weak climax. An average fare.

ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR benefits from an intriguing script but it gets affected by the second half Movie Review: ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR benefits from an intriguing script

Star Cast: Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick

Director: Paul Feig

Another Simple Favor Movie Review Synopsis:
ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR is the story of a famous author and influencer who gets into trouble yet again. A few years after the events of the first part, Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) is now an author and also dabbles in solving criminal cases. She has even written a book about her experience of getting involved in the disappearance and fake death of Emily Nelson (Blake Lively). Sadly, her book is not doing well, as intended. At a book-reading session, Emily arrives. She was in prison and was released all of a sudden. She also informs Stephanie that she’s getting married to Dante Versano (Michele Morrone), an Italian bigwig. Dante asks for another favour – she asks Emily to be her maid of honour at her wedding in Capri. Stephanie is in two minds. This is when Emily threatens to sue her for writing about her in her novel without her consent. Hence, Stephanie reluctantly agrees to join her. At the wedding venue, Stephanie learns that Sean (Henry Golding), Emily’s ex-husband, is also invited along with Emily’s mother Margaret McLinden (Elizabeth Perkins) and her aunt Linda McLinden (Allison Janney). Dante’s mother Portia (Elena Sofia Ricci) hates Emily. The situation is volatile and on top of it, a murder takes place on the island. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Another Simple Favor Movie Story Review:
Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis’s story is full of twists and turns. Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis’s screenplay is fast-paced and unpredictable. However, it gives the feeling of been-there-done-that. The dialogues, like the first part, are hilarious and savage.

Paul Feig’s direction is effective. He tries his best to make sure that the USPs of the first part are repeated in the sequel. Hence, the electrifying chemistry between the two female leads and the sassy exchange of words between them are present in abundance. The tension that arises at the wedding also keeps the interest going. There’s a major twist in the second half which will be unexpected.

However, the way the suspense unfolds could have been better. Moreover, the second half is when the film turns into the story of the character being wrongly framed for murder in a foreign country. This whole plot point and the way it happens are cliched and this takes away the charm of the film to a great extent. The first part worked big time as nothing was commonplace; that same factor, sadly, is not present here.

Another Simple Favor Movie Review Performances:
Anna Kendrick yet again delivers an entertaining performance. This time, her character has evolved as life happened to her. Yet, she’s still naive and this balance has been nicely achieved by Anna in her act. Blake Lively, as expected, is fiery yet again. She keeps her act mysterious and she does full justice to her part. Henry Golding dominates the show, despite limited screen time. Elizabeth Perkins, Allison Janney and Elena Sofia Ricci lend able support. Michele Morrone doesn’t get much scope. Alex Newell (Vicky) leaves a mark. Ian Ho (Nicky) is okay. It’s shocking that the makers ignore him in the middle of the film, especially when he goes through a devastating life episode. Andrew Rannells (Darren), Bashir Salahuddin (Detective Summerville), Lorenzo de Moor (Matteo), Max Malatesta (Detective Antonio Lucchese) and Taylor Ortega (Agent Irene Walker) are fair.

Another Simple Favor movie music and other technical aspects:
Theodore Shapiro’s music is in sync with the film’s theme. Indian moviegoers will be surprised as the Italian song ‘L’Italiano’ is played; a popular Bollywood song was lifted from this Toto Cutugno composition. John Schwartzman’s cinematography is charming but the lensman makes sure not to focus too much on the beautiful locales. Renee Ehrlich Kalfus’s costumes are striking and will be talked about. Martin Whist’s production design is rich. Brent White’s editing is slick.

Another Simple Favor Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR benefits from an intriguing script and a series of unexpected twists. However, the cliched developments in the second half hold it back. Nevertheless, its whodunit appeal and strong casting are likely to drive promising viewership.

THUNDERBOLTS is powered by strong performances, sharp humour, tense moments which will create a craze Movie Review: THUNDERBOLTS revives the MCU glory and will create a craze among Marvel fans

Star Cast: Florence Pugh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Lewis Pullman

Director: Jake Schreier

Thunderbolts Movie Review Synopsis:
THUNDERBOLTS is the story of a team of antiheroes. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) works for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and does her dirty work. She is depressed over the tragic death of her sister and feels quite lonely. Valentina is the director of the CIA and was formerly the head of the OXE Group. She is accused of several human rights violations while working on human trials. Valentina refutes all the allegations. Knowing that she can be in trouble, she asks Yelena to go to a secret vault in a hilly region of the USA and destroy the OXE servers so that she can’t be convicted. Yelena reaches the vault and realizes that it’s a trap as she is confronted by John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Ava (Hannah John-Kamen). They were also sent to the vault for the same reason. Soon, they learn that Valentina wants to finish them all as their existence can also put Valentina in trouble. While trying to find ways to escape, they are also bewildered as they meet Bob (Lewis Pullman). He’s no mercenary and is wearing hospital clothes. Moreover, he has no memory of how he landed in the vault. However, he seems to have some extraordinary abilities. All four escape, with the intention of disappearing so that all-powerful Valentina can’t trace them. As luck would have it, they are compelled to be a team thanks to Bucky (Sebastian Stan). The team expands as Yelena’s father Alexei aka Red Guardian (David Harbour) also gets enlisted. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Thunderbolts Movie Story Review:
Eric Pearson’s story is exhilarating and different from the recent films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo’s screenplay is captivating although the writing slips in some places. The dialogues add to the fun and madness.

Jake Schreier’s direction is impressive. He executes the film in Marvel style but also gives the narrative a nice touch. The characters are well fleshed out and he also makes a comment on mental health. While doing so, he maintains a balance and ensures that the film doesn’t get too depressing. Meanwhile, the humour is present in abundance. The intro scene is decent and the real fun begins once the antiheroes realize they are sent to the vault to get killed. The manner in which they escape will raise a lot of laughs. The chase sequence at the highway is also hilarious and it ends on a clapworthy note. Post-interval, the madness goes high by many notches. The pre-climax is nail biting. The final scene, however, will lead to hoots and claps as it sets the base for the future films of the MCU. In fact, the ending is very exciting and the craze that it’ll generate will remind one of the good old days of MCU. And that’s not all. The lengthy post-credit scene further contributes to the film’s plusses.

On the flipside, the climax is not a typical one. It works but at the same time, it gets a bit lengthy and even dragging. There might be moments where you’ll think where the film is heading. The sudden tonal shift also makes the experience slightly underwhelming.

Thunderbolts Movie Review Performances:
Florence Pugh plays the part of the lead actress with panache. The way she got her accent right is admirable. Her struggle with loneliness seems authentic; the scene where she breaks down in the second half is memorable. Julia Louis-Dreyfus delivers a fine performance without going over the top. Wyatt Russell is entertaining but Hannah John-Kamen doesn’t have much scope. Lewis Pullman has a crucial part and the way he gets into the skin of his character is seen to be believed. David Harbour is adorable while Sebastian Stan, as expected, is dependable. Wendell Pierce (Congressman Gary) and Geraldine Viswanathan (Mel) lend able support.

Thunderbolts movie music and other technical aspects:
Son Lux’s background score has the trademark Marvel stamp all over. Andrew Droz Palermo’s cinematography does justice to the scale of the film. The action is not disturbing, except for a couple of shots, while the VFX is top-notch, especially in the scenes of The Void. Sanja Milkovic Hays’s costumes are stylish yet realistic. Grace Yun’s production design is grand. Angela Catanzaro and Harry Yoon’s editing is satisfactory in most parts of the film. A few scenes could have been slicker.

Thunderbolts Movie Review Conclusion:
On the whole, THUNDERBOLTS successfully revives the former glory of the MCU, powered by strong performances, sharp humour, tense moments and a commendable focus on mental health. The film concludes on an exhilarating note, which will create a craze in cinemas, especially among die-hard Marvel fans. As a result, it has the potential to surprise at the box office.
